Dancing through Gunshots in Brazil's Favelas
Ballet and Bullets: Dancing Out of the Favela” was produced with support from the Pulitzer Center on Crisis Reporting. “Na Ponta dos Pes” (On Tiptoes) is a ballet project in the Alemão favela complex in Rio de Janeiro, created by Tuany Nascimento – a 23-year-old dancer who represented Brazil at international events during a flourishing career that was abruptly cut short by a lack of resources. Rather than letting her head drop, the setback strengthened Tuany’s determination to help troubled communities through dance. Tuany started teaching classes in the Morro do Adeus favela, where she lives. It’s one of the roughest parts of Alemão, which is currently at the centre of a rolling feud between rival drug cartels and the military police. Many students in her group of girls, aged 4-15, come from families caught up in narco turf wars and afflicted by the chronic crisis of opportunity and urban poverty in the Favelas. With an average 20 incidents of weapons fired every day in Rio, last year saw more than 100 police deaths – as well as hundreds more civilians, many of whom are caught in the crossfire of confrontations in their local areas. Intensifying violence in Alemão heightens Tuany’s motivation to find support for the construction of a community centre, which will give her girls a safe space to dance and study. After the challenges of her own career, Tuany knows her students can’t all become pro ballerinas – but the discipline she teaches will transcend the act of learning to dance, setting them up with a better chance to escape the bitter cycle of hardship which swallows up so many young lives in Brazil. During one of her lessons in a basketball court in the centre of the Morro do Adeus favela a shootout between rival gangs breaks out with innocent civilians caught in the crossfire. Tuany is forced to put the ballet school on hold due to escalating violence and until they can raise money for the new community centre so they can have a safe space to practice. Fire Games of Napoli
Each year, on the 17th January, teenagers in Naples come together to make a bonfire to mark San Antonio day. The celebration goes back hundreds of years but has recently become controversial as locals argue it schools young people in criminality. The event, named “Cippo”, has been transformed into a war between kids and so called “babygangs” of different inner-city neighbourhoods who go to increasingly extreme lengths to steal trees to make the largest fire possible, a sign of their strength. They prepare for months, then stay up all night to guard their prized trees in secret locations. In this way, they are taught to protect their patch. The event affects everyone in the city differently. VICE and Neapolitan director Victoria Fiore, follow a group of teens in the Spanish Quarters, a deprived neighbourhood of Naples and real-life setting of TV show Gomorra, Rosa, a proud mother, warned her son of the dangers, but now has to write to him in prison. Social worker, Eleonora, supports the Cippo as a means for the kids to express their creativity in a run down neighbourhood with few spaces for kids, and a way for kids to learn about hierarchy, loyalty and dedication. But while the kids continue to turn the narrow streets of Naples into an arsonist's paradise, it's not easy to tell if Cippo is a tradition, a game, or an initiation. London’s Knife Crime Emergency: ON A KNIFE EDGE
In the wake of multiple knife-related murders in the UK's capital, activist and ex-gang member Josh Osbourne takes an in-depth look at the "code of silence". This is an entrenched mindset that regularly stops young people from going to the authorities, in fear of being labelled a "snitch". Britain's most senior police officer attributes the recent spate of murders to austerity, drug markets, police cuts and social media, yet despite a controversial crack-down targeting drill music videos, the number of deaths keep rising. Josh follows the grieving families struggling to find justice and answers in their own communities. He speaks to an active gang member about how reputation is a fiercely protected social capital and shame can be a gateway to violence. He learns that surviving a knife attack is no longer seen as a close call, but a badge of honour, and how the consequences of knife crime stretch beyond simply life and death. The film explores how the internet has profoundly altered the way conflicts are instigated and unravel on London's streets, and how the communities affected are reacting to this. As London remains in the throes of a knife crime epidemic, VICE takes a look at one of the most important domestic issues of our time. Fighting Food Poverty with Britain's Busiest Food Banks
VICE heads to Newcastle to go inside one of the busiest food banks in Britain, where food is being distributed for free to more than 1,000 people a week. We meet the dedicated volunteers and the locals for whom poverty has become a part of everyday life after decades of industrial decline and years of austerity cuts. Inevitably, in such a situation, the system will occasionally falter. The War to Live in London: Regeneration Game (Full Length)
In the run up to the 2015 general election, a war is going on for the right to live in London. Rapid gentrification – praised as "regeneration" by local councils and property developers, derided as "social cleansing" by critics – is breaking up established communities. In some cases, families who've lived in London for generations are left homeless; in others, they are forced to move across the city or out of it completely. Meanwhile, the real estate opportunities are making lots of people – many of whom do not actually live in London – very rich. Latin America’s Deadliest Place to Be a Woman

The Story Behind the Iconic ‘Tank Man’ Photo | Developing News
Legendary Magnum photographer Stuart Franklin talks to us about his famous ‘Tank Man’ image of a single man standing in front of a line of tanks, symbolising the uprising that happened at Tiananmen Square in 1989. It’s become an ubiquitous image in the West of the pro-democracy protests, but in China it’s like it’s been airbrushed out of history. Even getting the roll out of China was tricky, it was smuggled out in a box of tea by a French student heading for Paris. Stuart Franklin talks us through the events leading up to the photo and how it went on to be considered one of the greatest images of the 20th Century. When you are on the front line, picking up a camera can often result in an image that immortalises a moment in time. From pictures captured during armed conflict to anti-facist protests, global pandemics to the start of a revolution - iconic photos reveal exactly what happened there and then. In this Developing News series, VICE interviews photographers whose photos have become synonymous with important world events. The photographers relive the story behind the photos, telling their tales from the front line of battlefields and hospitals, and reflecting on their journey to becoming a photographer. We hear how they sought out to document the truth, even risking their lives, to provide proof of events that stay long after the memories fade. The Arranged Gay Marriage Bureau provides a revolutionary arranged marriage system exclusively for gay men and women. With over 3,700 clients worldwide, it's founder Urvi Shah claims to fulfil people's dreams and help find them a partner for a substantial fee. After seeing impressive testimonies and stories about the Bureau in the media, VICE's Reeta Loi uses the service to attempt to find a partner and follows the journey of Keith as he searches for a husband. Urvi's assurances that she personally picks out a suitable partner for each of her clients, leads them to start the process with great optimism. Imran Khan Talks Cricket, the Taliban and Being Ousted from Power | VWN Meets
Pakistan is in the middle of political chaos — and one man is at the center of it all. Former Prime Minister Imran Khan was ousted last year in a no-confidence vote, but polls suggest he remains the country’s most popular political leader. Within a year of being removed from office, 70-year-old Khan has survived an assassination attempt and faces dozens of new charges ranging from corruption, terrorism to sedition. The current government has branded the popular politician known for his philanthropy and cricket career as a "militant" and attempted to arrest him using excessive force, while tear gassing, attacking and arresting his supporters. Khan believes the charges against him are political persecution tactics meant to distract him from campaigning for elections due this year. VICE World News’ Isobel Yeung sat down with Khan at his home in Lahore on March 6, 2023. Ground Zero: Mali - Insurgents vs. The Malian Army (Part 1)
Ground Zero: Mali was shot in Gao, Mali, on February 21, 2013. It's basically the first legitimate combat footage to come out of the war there. Normally the French ban journalists from the frontlines and film a sanitized version of the fighting themselves and then distribute it to the media. In this case, the insurgents came to us: they slipped into Gao overnight on small boats and used suicide bombers to blast their way into government buildings. The French left the fighting to the Malian army for most of the day as a test of their combat abilities. Malian soldiers, while very brave, are almost completely untrained and had great difficulty fighting less than a dozen jihadists, some of whom were children. They fired wild bursts of automatic fire everywhere, destroying the city center. The Malians soon ran out of ammunition and had to wait for the French to show up and save the day. How Britain Stole $45 Trillion from India with Trains | Empires of Dirt
There is a misguided idea that India should be grateful for the democracy, law and trains that the British Empire brought to their country. But along with these ‘gifts’, Britain also stole $45 trillion from India during its long and oppressive rule, which culminated in the biggest mass migration in human history during the Partition of India and Pakistan. And those beloved trains? They became the sites of mass slaughter as violent clashes occurred when over four million people were uprooted from their homes and forced to trek to a Muslim-majority Pakistan and a Hindu-majority India. VICE World News host Zing Tsjeng reveals exactly why India shouldn’t be grateful for their trains. Architects Are Using Mud to Build Sustainable Homes
‘Earth built’ or 'breathable houses' are supposedly eco-friendly to produce, because they use readily available, natural materials and building methods. Homes made from mud have been used for thousands of years across many cultures, but they’ve been traditionally created by men. In this episode of the ecological alarm clock that is Extinction Update, we travel to Mosorin, Serbia to meet Dragana Kojičić, an architect who for the past 10 years has been developing the Centre for Earth Architecture, a group reviving these ancient traditionally male-dominated techniques and teaching younger generations of women the earth built method. Could this back to basics building method be a climate solution for the rest of the planet? Drugs Are Poisoning the Water in This Mexican Vacation Destination
Tulum, Mexico — VICE arrives in this natural paradise formed over thousands of years of geological change, creating otherworldly rock pools and ancient, interconnected cave formations. But we’re not the only ones — tourism is flourishing here, with a new generation of “eco-travellers” and influencers, eager to share their holiday amongst the hidden rainforest cenotes to the rest of the world, bringing gangsters from nearby Cancun with them. Now a newer problem has been detected - cocaine traces found in these ancient rockpools hints at the interconnectivity of the water system here, the same one that connects the untreated sewage from the newly built eco-resorts where the tourists stay, and the rockpools they’ve travelled so far to enjoy. Ironically, this influx of tourists is destroying the natural beauty and ecosystem that attracted them here in the first place, leaving them swimming in their own excrement.
